As the daughter of a German model and a French photographer, Isabel Marant was almost born into her life as a Parisian designer. Isabel Marant takes the term "ready-to-wear" literally by creating usable and functional designs, characterized by their careless, elegant, and detailed aesthetic expression. With an instantly recognizable aesthetic, the brand has changed from being a secret reserved to the French women to becoming an international fashion phenomenon.

At the age of 15 designer Isabel Marant received a sewing machine from her father, which led her to sew clothes for herself from discarded materials. The hobby rapidly developed, and in 1995 she released the first official collection of her eponymous label. Growing up in Paris during the 1980s, she was exposed to the very glamorous and chic aesthetic of the time. As a designer she was more attracted to an androgynous and cool approach to design, combining the raw and the feminine universe. The collision between the different styles resulted in a reinterpretation of French womenswear and transformed the previously ultra-glamourous Parisian fashion image.

Her credo is simple. Isabel Marant only designs pieces that she will wear herself. This also means that nothing leaves the workshop and factory without her having tried it herself. According to Marant, clothes are brought to life when used. As a designer, she therefore finds beauty in an un-ironed shirt or patinated jeans, which highlights a charming imperfection. Her alternative approach to fashion is also expressed through the dualisms in her collections, which often show a clash between opposing pairs, as masculine/feminine or raw/romantic. This creates the instantly recognizable aesthetic that is evident in everything she does – whether it’s a masculine tweed blazer, iconic shoes, detailed accessories, ruffled dressed, or bohemian-inspired lace blouses in exclusive prints. Isabel Marant has an uncompromising approach to creating iconic pieces, that survive in your wardrobe, season after season.
